In my last few tutorials you have seen what LiDAR data is and how to do LiDAR data analysis.
High resolution satellite imagery is most important part while visualizing result after analysing LiDAR data.
In this tutorial I will show you how to download free high resolution satellite imagery.

Step1: Visit National Map Site
Step2: Select Area of Interest
Search for any location or draw polygon or provide coordinates etc.
We are looking for imagery data covers LiDAR data. As this post is an extension of my last post to download LiDAR data, in this post also will use same coordinates.
Min Lat: 43.30099010129026
Min Lon: -88.85407447814943
Max Lat: 43.306661588070774
Max Lon: -88.84051322937013
Then click on Draw AOI button.
Step3: Select Map Layer
Now need to select USGS Imagery Topofrom layer (Top right of map) for better observation of map.
Step4: Select LiDAR data footprint
The satellite image you need to do LiDAR analysis. So before downloading satellite image you need to check the satellite image you wish to download is covering LiDAR data or not.
To do that you first need to mark footprint of your LiDAR datain the map.
Follow Step4, Step5 and Step6 to mark footprint of your selected LiDAR data to the map.
Step5: Select satellite imagery data type
After selecting footprint again click on Datasets tab from top left.
Now uncheck Elevation Source Data (3DEP) – Lidar, IfSAR and select Imagery – NAIP Plus (1 meter to 1 foot)
Step6: Search for LiDAR data Product
Now click on Find products
Step 7: Choosing best imagery for your LiDAR data
Now in Products tab list imagery products will be available. By clicking footprint of each product an AOI will be drawn in map. In my case only one imagery is available for my provided coordinates.
Step7: Download satellite imagery free
After selecting best satellite image data, click download button to download high resolution satellite image for LiDAR data analysis.
That’s all.
Note:
Most common formats of satellite imagery are:
- JP2
- TIF
- TIFF
Our downloaded imagery data format is JP2.
Conclusion
In this post I have shown how to download high resolution satellite imagery free online. In my previous post I have discussed how to download LiDAR data free online and in my next post I will show you how to use these imagery and LiDAR data develop something interesting.
